…for inventing modern-day air conditioning! When it is as hot as it has been in Phoenix over the last couple of weeks (up to 120°F/48°C) it doesn’t matter if it is “a dry heat” as Arizonans like to point out. To me – the Central European that I am and always will be – it is freakin’ sweltering and I certainly never get tired of complaining about it. The last thing I want to do in this weather is turn on the oven or stove. Instead, I gravitate towards light and easy summer salads that are quick to make – like this one with watermelon, arugula, feta, red onion, almonds and mint. It may sound like a weird combination but this refreshing salad definitely hits the spot when you’re hot and hungry!

If at first you don’t succeed…
About a week ago, I had a bunch of broccoli left over and thought that creating a recipe for broccoli quinoa cakes would be a good idea. Easy enough, right? Wrong! My first attempt at making these little suckers ended in utter disaster. They were completely inedible and had to be thrown in the garbage. Let’s just say that ordering pizza and drinking wine were part of the program that evening to help me get over my bruised ego and the messy kitchen despite the lack of dinner.

And then here comes the cabbage soup. Straight outta the slow cooker. A totally unsexy and honestly kinda boring looking dish (I mean, that color?!) but trust me – it is seriously delicious. And although it’s vegan, this creamy cabbage and potato soup reminds me of something hearty and comforting my Oma would have cooked to warm my body and soul!
Life has been busy, mamas!
I am not suggesting that I’m busier than everybody else and certainly do not like to carry the “busy” label around like a badge of honor but man…things have been a little crazy around here lately!
Besides the usual business of being a full time mama of two (Um, why does it get crazier as they get older? I guess I completely underestimated the trifecta of school, sports and opposite schedules. How do you working mamas do this? And what about all you beautiful mamas with three and more kids? I am completely humbled!), I was sick for most of November which had me realize my limitations as to what I can and cannot do when I’m not at my best. And now that we’re into December, chances are that the pace (not just for me but for all of us!) will pick up even more and probably won’t slow down one bit until we make it successfully through the holiday season. Ho ho ho!
