What I love in April

April was a total blur.

And to be perfectly honest –  I was not entirely confident that this post was actually going to happen before the month was over. The weeks are just flying by, are they not?

May is right around the corner and with it the beginning of summer. Sure, it might still be snowing in Germany but in Arizona, the preparations for the dog days are well underway. School is out in just a few short weeks (say it ain’t so!) and since it is forecasted to hit 100 degrees here in a couple of days, I thought it was appropriate to share what I’ve been loving going into the hot season…

Summer Green Beauty Wish List

In Phoenix the sun is very intense year-round so protecting your skin every day as much as possible is crazy important. And while I am really good at applying sunscreen to my face in the morning I am really not that good at reapplying throughout the day, especially when I have makeup on. Luckily, ILIA just came out with their Moondance Powder that seems to be the perfect solution for my sunscreen reapplication predicament. This light universal translucent finishing powder is made with non-nano zinc oxide that provides SPF 20 protection. Hibiscus Flower extract acts as an anti-oxidant while fine pearl pigment offers light reflecting properties that brings a luminosity to the skin. The one slightly negative thing I have heard about this product so far is the packaging. One fellow green beauty blogger mentioned that while the powder and the refillable brush itself is great, overall she would only give the product design a B-. Apparently,  it takes a lot of shaking to actually get the powder out. We shall see…

Another product with built-in sun protection I am very excited about is the Suntegrity Lip C.P.R. SPF 30 natural mineral lipstick. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen the swatches I posted the other day. I got a sample bag via the manufacturer’s website that includes all of the hues for free with an $8.00 shipping fee that can be applied towards a future purchase. Color, protect and revive your lips with eight gorgeous, highly pigmented shades that range from nude to bold and that offer just a hint of shimmer. While they are all lovely (Um, I’ll take one of each, please!), my favorite of the bunch is Sunset Coral, a warm coral shade that has more orange than pink undertones. Unfortunately, this particular formula is a tad drying so I layer it on top of a lip balm or under the creamier, rosy golden Sunrise Peach for better consistency and a beautiful custom color combo.

Shop for a Cause

I have been following Wakened Apparel and its founder Cassidy for a while now and finally placed my first order. I needed (OK fine, wanted…potayto, potahto!) some new yoga shirts and while I love their designs I love what this company stands for even more. Every month, Wakened Apparel partners with a different charity that changes the world for the better. They promote said charity for 30 days and create beautiful apparel and lifestyle items to raise funding for them. During that whole month for every item purchased, they donate $7 to its charity while previous campaign items donate 10% to their charity partners.

I bought the Lotus tank which donates to Not for Sale , an organization that protects people and communities around the world from modern-day slavery and human trafficking. I also got the Wild and Free tank that benefits my favorite animal – the elephant! For each tank bought, Wakened Apparel donates 10% to the International Elephant Foundation supporting their global conservation efforts working to protect elephant species and their habitats.

Both tops are super soft and have a great fit. In fact, like them so much that I might actually not wear them to yoga after all but rock them with cutoffs as part of my hot weather momiform instead.

Book Club Reads

In case you are already putting together your summer reading list and are looking for a book that tugs at your heart strings, I highly recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. I just finished it with my yogi book club as part of my teacher training and absolutely loved it! Have you read it?

I have to admit that initially, I was less than excited when I heard that this novel was about race car driving and – to make matters worse – was written from the perspective of a dog. I mean…what? But the story unfolds into this emotional family drama of love and loss that offers a great deal of wisdom on how we can live more mindfully and cultivate a sense of inner peace that lets us see beyond our biggest obstacles and helps us become who we were always meant to be.

“To live every day as if it had been stolen from death, that is how I would like to live. To feel the joy of life […] To separate oneself from the burden, the angst, the anguish that we all encounter every day. To say I am alive, I am wonderful, I am. […] That is something to aspire to. When I am a person, that is how I will live my life.”
