Ursa Major Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant

Finally, a natural deodorant that really works (really!).

Ever since I have been en route to green living, I have tried to drag my family along. My kids have been easy so far because obviously, they do not have a choice (sorrynotsorry). However, my husband has been a bit of a different story especially when it comes to cleaning up his bathroom cabinet. It’s not that he doesn’t care about his health or the health of our planet – not at all! It’s more like that when it comes to personal care items, he is a typical guy who wants to conveniently grab whatever stuff he needs on his way home from work and that is on sale for five bucks tops at the drugstore. Can you blame him? I think not!

Slowly but surely I have been replacing his products with safer options one at a time and have been pretty successful with stuff like shampoo, soap, face wash, and toothpaste. Unfortunately, deodorant (one of the products you should consider switching out as soon as possible due to the level of toxic ingredients in it and the frequency with which you use it) has been more of a challenge. I tried my best at convincing him to give the deodorant cream I have been using and loving for the last year a try but that was not really an option since he does not like to “finger paint his arm pits.” To shut me up, he finally went on a solo mission to Whole Foods to buy a “hippie” deodorant not too long ago. However, that mission failed entirely as whatever brands he picked up did not work for him at all. None of them!

Thankfully, this was right around the time when Ursa Major came out with their Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant (unisex and in stick form = promising) so I ordered it for hubs and…ding ding ding! We finally have a winner!

Ursa Major is a Vermont-based company whose founders believe in making healthy choices about how we live, what we eat and what we put on our skin that minimize exposure to synthetic chemicals while harnessing nature’s abundant power to nourish and restore. Every product they launch has to meet three simple criteria – Is it effective? Is it healthy? Is it sublime? – before they even consider bringing it to market. They use only the highest-grade natural ingredients, sourced wherever possible from family-owned, sustainable growers and never include any petrochemicals, sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrance or color, glycols, silicones or PEGs in their formulas.

Ursa Major’s deodorant eliminates underarm odor while absorbing excess moisture and soothing sensitive skin with the help of hops (to fight odor), kaolin clay (to absorb moisture and help neutralize odors), eucalyptus (to eliminate odor-causing bacteria) and aloe (to soothe sensitive skin). A custom blend of ginger, rosemary, grapefruit, chamomile and lemon give it a fresh and cooling aroma while its non-staining, cruelty-free formula is 100% natural and toxin-free.

My husband loves it. OK, he didn’t quite say it like that. It was more along the lines of “I like it as much as I can like deodorant” but he says it works just as well as his conventional drugstore brand in keeping him “dry and stink-free” throughout his work day. Yasss! I may or may not have stolen it a bunch of times already and have to say that out of all the natural deodorants I have tried (and there were many!), this is my favorite one to date. Bravo, Ursa Major!

And now on to finding a Mr. Healthy Haus approved non-toxic hair styling product…
