My Green Beauty Summer Essentials

The last few weeks have been an emotional roller coaster.

A close relative of mine has been seriously ill. And since I haven’t been able to see or talk to her at all, a paralyzing feeling of helplessness has left me rather anxious. Worrying lots and sleeping little is truly exhausting and makes “being on” all day with my kids and taking care of myself so much more challenging. Time to dig myself out of the funk!

Yesterday, I dragged my butt to yoga and slept a triumphant (uninterrupted!) eight hours which made me feel almost good as new today. The other thing that usually gets me out of a daze? Beauty talk. Beauty talk in all its glorious frivolity seems to always do the trick rather quickly so let’s have at it, mamas! Shall we?

Summer Time

If you’re looking to update your beauty routine to beat the heat and all that comes with it during the next few months, look no further! I have compiled a list of some of my seasonal must-haves that will be sure to help you stay naturally beautiful through Labor Day and beyond. The best part – they’re all under $50.00!

1. Shield your Skin: Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen and Primer SPF 30 – $45.00, purchase HERE

Summer typically means spending more time in the sun which makes using sunscreen on a daily basis even more important. Most traditional sunscreens use chemical UV filters who are known to permeate the skin, cause allergic reactions and disrupt hormones. A safer alternative? Mineral sunscreens that use zinc oxide to block the sun’s UV rays. Suntegrity – one of my all-time faves – has been my go-to daily moisturizer for months now and I do not want to know life without it. Developed by a woman named Tricia after losing her mother to melanoma, this award winning sunscreen offers broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection using 20% zinc oxide. It also contains anti-oxidants and amino acids to enhance protection and help with skin repair. Free of any and all nasties, this sunscreen is very moisturizing and offers hydration throughout the day. It glides on smoothly and wears beautifully under make-up. Additionally, it is non-greasy therefore suitable for acne prone skin, and has a very pleasant citrus scent. Love! I just ordered the tinted version of this product and am eager to try and review it shortly.

2. Get Glowing: Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil – $40.00, purchase HERE

This face oil is like liquid gold but without the exorbitant price tag! The Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil is the most concentrated rosehip oil currently on the market. It is a natural and safe yet powerful alternative to synthetic retinol. High levels of trans-retinoic acid deliver pro-vitamin A to the skin boosting its natural healing process without causing irritation. This oil also contains vitamin E derived from sunflowers that reduces the photo-aging effects of UVA light on the skin. A true multitasker, this product improves the appearance of scars and stretch marks, hyperpigmentation due to melasma, sun damage and acne, and fine lines. One word of caution: Rosehip oil is photosensitive, which means that you should avoid sun exposure. For that reason, I have been applying 2-3 drops only at night after cleansing and toning, sometimes mixing it with a couple of drops of organic argan oil. After you massage it into your skin, make sure it is fully absorbed before getting into bed as the oil can stain your clothes and sheets.

3. Replenish & Rehydrate: SW Basics Cream – $32.00, purchase HERE (also available at Target stores)

My lovely facialist Amber at Sage Organic Skincare highly recommended this product for any dry areas and I’m glad that she did. This extremely rich cream is made of only three organic ingredients (shea butter, coconut and olive oil) and sinks deeply into the skin for long lasting moisture without feeling heavy or greasy. It is equally as great for the face as it is for the body!

4. Pretty Pedi – Zoya Natural Nail Polish in Livingston – $9.00, purchase HERE (also available at ULTA stores)

Sandal season calls for beautifully polished piggies! Zoya Livingston is a classic red with cool undertones that looks exquisite on fingers and toes alike. While admittedly not entirely clean, Zoya is free of toxic ingredients such as toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin and DBP (dibutyl phthalate). I like Zoya much better than most of the all natural, water-based polishes I have tried as it is longer lasting and more affordable.

5. Signature Scent: APOTHIA LA Pearl Eau de Parfum – $45.00, purchase HERE

I had been looking for a perfume that does not contain any harmful ingredients for quite some time. Unfortunately, most pure and organic fragrance oils I have sampled I like for aromatherapy purposes but not so much as an everyday fragrance. I first got introduced to Pearl when my husband picked it up at Citrine Natural Beauty Bar (one of my favorite stores in the Phoenix area!) and gave it to me for Christmas last year. When I could not find any information on its ingredients, I emailed Melissa from Citrine to find out more about it. “The APOTHIA LA line is not 100% natural but is a non-toxic brand. They use a proprietary blend but none of their fragrances contain parabens or phthalates or anything harmful to your health.” With hints of shiso leaf, plum blossom, peony, orris and warm golden amber, Pearl is a delicate, clean and light scent that epitomizes the effortlessness of summer. I get tons of compliments every time I wear it!

6. Protect your Pits: Soapwalla Deodorant Cream – $14.00, purchase HERE

Deodorant should be one of the first products to swap out when going green as it contains a slew of toxic chemicals, such as aluminum chlorohydrate, parabens, propylene glycol, triclosan, artificial colors, fragrance, coal tar, and talc. I keep reordering the Soapwalla Deodorant Cream as it is one of the few natural deodorants that actually work! It is vegan and made with the highest quality organic and food-grade ingredients. Superfine vegetable powders and clays, as well as lavender, peppermint and tea tree essential oils absorb moisture and inhibit bacteria. While applying deodorant with my fingers took a little getting used, it goes on fairly easy and dries quickly. Soapwalla does not contain any questionable additives and while it is not an antiperspirant, it is long lasting and highly effective. Definitely worth the $$$!

What do you need to keep you happy and gorgeous during the summer?
