Green Beauty Buys – Target Edition

With the blogosphere buzzing…

…ahead of the in-store launch of clean beauty cult favorite S.W. Basics at Target next month, I thought I round up the green products I routinely pick up at the big box store while shopping for yet another birthday present. While none of these products are necessarily the most glamorous, they are all safe, effective, and very affordable.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap – $10.79-17.99

This certified organic and certified fair trade pure castile soap is a real work horse. Die-hard fans love it for its 101 different uses – wash your face, wash your clothes, wash your vegetables. While I’m not quite that adventurous, I do put Dr. Bronner’s in a liquid soap dispenser, diluted 1:1 with water, to replace regular hand soap. One bottle lasts forever and the soap – since it is made of organic plant oils like olive, coconut and jojoba, and is free of sodium laureth sulfate, fragrance and other nasties –  does not dry out your skin. I’ve also used this in the shower when I ran out of body wash and it works pretty darn well.

Acure Organics Body Wash and Body Lotion – $9.99 each and Acure Maroccan Argan Oil – $12.99

Acure Organics is a family owned and operated company founded on sustainable principles to provide the highest quality fair trade, natural and certified organic personal care products. Each of their products is free from animal testing, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, harmful preservatives and artificial colors.

I love all of the Acure products and used to make an extra trip to Whole Foods to buy them. Their body wash and body lotions are delightful and smell heavenly. If you like face oils and are used to buying a very prominent brand of Argan oil at Sephora you might give Acure’s Maroccan Argan Oil a try. In my opinion, it works just as well and is considerably cheaper than the brand name stuff.

Acure also offers a decent assortment of non-toxic and color safe hair products. Some of them that I have tried and have given the Healthy Haus seal of approval include the Argan shampoo, conditioner and deep root repair hair mask (unfortunately, neither of which are currently sold at Target).  An excellent alternative to your favorite chemical laden drug store variety!

The Honest Company Organic Healing Balm – $12.99

Founded in 2011 by actress Jessica Alba, The Honest Company creates non-toxic household cleaning and personal care products. While I am subscribed to their monthly bundles I’m happy I can pick up some of my must-haves at Target if I’m running low.

One of my favorite Honest products is the Organic Healing Balm. With all natural, certified organic oils, extracts and beeswax it is safe to use on irritated skin. It soothes eczema and helps heal minor scrapes and cuts. This balm is also great for chapped lips, dry winter hands, even diaper rash. Think of it as your non-toxic petroleum-free alternative to Aquaphor. It has really improved my little guy’s dry, sensitive skin!

La Tourangelle Organic Virgin Unrefined Coconut Oil – $7.99

Coconut Oil is one of those products I wonder how I have lived without it for so long. 90% of the fatty acids in coconut oil are saturated with almost 50% being lauric acid known to kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi. Quality (meaning virgin, unrefined, organic) coconut oil serves as an excellent moisturizer and natural sunscreen (not enough to skip broad spectrum UV protection altogether though!). I use it as a make-up remover when double cleansing my face and as an all-over body lotion. Coconut oil is 100% natural and leaves your skin smelling like you are on a tropical vacation. I also use it as my main cooking oil so I usually keep one jar in the bathroom and one in the pantry.

Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Napa Vineyard – $8.99

When it comes to makeup, I almost exclusively use RMS Beauty products – one of the cleanest lines out there. However, I wanted to find a replacement for my favorite red NARS lipstick and picked up this lip crayon on a whim. Napa Vineyard is the prettiest shade of red. It is highly pigmented and long lasting with a matte yet non-drying formula.

Eos Lip Balm in Sweet Mint – $2.99

Eos Lip Balm in Sweet Mint is 95% organic, 100% natural, and paraben and petrolatum free. Vitamin E, shea butter and jojoba oil keep your lips hydrated while peppermint oil gives them a refreshing tingle. Several of these little spheres are flying around my house, my car, my purse…Yup, I may have a problem!
